HS Voices Connect Japan
On June 6, 2026, an online awareness event titled “Is It Really Okay to Wait and See? It Could Be Hidradenitis Suppurativa — When in Doubt, See a Dermatologist” was held by UCB Japan in conjunction with HS Awareness Week.
The event featured Professor Toshifumi Nomura from the Department of Dermatology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Tsukuba, Dr. Sayaka Yamaguchi from the Department of Dermatology, Graduate School of Medicine, University of the Ryukyus, and the comedy duo Pekopa. Together, they shared easy-to-understand information about the symptoms and treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa, also known as HS, and the importance of consulting a dermatologist early.
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic skin condition that can cause painful lumps, swelling, and pus-filled lesions, often appearing in areas such as the armpits, groin, buttocks, and other areas where skin rubs together.
As symptoms progress, HS can affect daily life, work, school, and relationships because of pain, drainage, scarring, and the emotional burden that comes with the condition.
At the same time, awareness of HS is still limited. Many people may think:
“I thought it was just acne.” “I thought it was just a boil and waited to see if it would go away.” “I felt embarrassed and could not talk to anyone about it.”
Recently, I also experienced several small areas of inflammation, about 5 mm in size, around my face during a period when I was feeling particularly fatigued. Even when the symptoms seem small, it can be difficult to know whether it is okay to wait and see, especially because HS can vary from person to person in terms of where it appears, how it feels, and how severe the pain may be.
That is why the message shared during this event — “If you notice symptoms that concern you, do not struggle alone. Please consider consulting a dermatologist early.” felt very important to me as someone living with HS.
HS Voices Connect Japan also had the opportunity to provide a comment for this event as a patient advocacy group.
HS is not only about pain. It is also a condition that can bring anxiety, loneliness, and feelings that are difficult to talk about with others. Through this event, we hope that more people will learn about HS, and that even one more person may feel, “I am not alone.”
The event is now available as an archive video on UCB Japan’s official YouTube channel. If you would like to learn more about HS, or if you or someone close to you has symptoms that may be concerning, we encourage you to watch the video.
